Mobile Media Encoded

January 25, 2008

Across the mobile landscape, video media remains to be a challenge for publishers who wish to broadcast over the mobile networks, as there are over 7000 different manufactured mobile handsets. The hardware is unique on almost every mobile device which requires a concerted effort by the publisher and hosting groups to serve up content that is valued as a quality and worth while user experience.

The Encoding processes create either a good or bad experience with your mobile user.

Encoding Introduction

Video goes through a process of “deep compression” so that the actual size of the video file can be transmitted over very tiny wireless networks. The media delivered over Verizon, Sprint, AT&T and others are so small and so inconsistent that a media producer takes in to consideration the low bandwidth, the high bandwidth and the multi-rate streaming files. In order to reach your hand set and playback, the video must be created using standards based video compression technology such as MPEG, 3gpp and H.264. You hear about Windows Media Format (WMF), QuickTime (QT) and Real Time Streaming Media (RTSP). In each of these cases the end video file is compressed or encoded and decoded on playback.

Windows Media has a very unique situation having the OS, the browser, the video player and the media format. It would seem that this strategy offers some consistency and benefit to mobile media play back. The costs associated with Windows Media system are both good and no so good.

All mobile devices are not created equal. Considerations include the carrier bandwidth, hardware and operating system on the mobile device.
